Elle – Portraits

Even with a little bit of a runny nose and and that tiredness you get only when you’re sick, Elle was a total dream to photograph. As you’ll see below, she’s incredibly beautiful and she totally melted my heart! Elle’s parents, Lauren and Mike, had an incredible home which was perfect for our session – tons of natural light and some gorgeous spaces where Elle could tuck away to play. I love photographing little ones when they’re around the age of one – they aren’t too shy in front of the camera yet and they tend to just go with the flow. Incredible!

Lauren Mae – Day Zero Photographs

I couldn’t wait! My niece, Lauren Mae, was born yesterday at 9:03 a.m. She has the softest cheeks in the world and the tiniest fingernails. She has no idea what she’s in store for with her energetic brothers. She is perfect. Just look.

Heather, Chris, Calen & Nathan: Congratulations! Lauren is completely adorable and I can’t wait to watch her grow. And try to play something other than trains. Love you all!

Braden & Brody – Little Ones

I’ve never quite seen two little boys as good at hugging each other as Braden and Brody. Braden’s hugs were tight and unrelenting and Brody’s hugs were short with one after the other. And sometimes they hugged without us even asking. What’s cuter than that?

Braden started early in our session, clutching Brody as tight as he could:

Doesn’t he break your heart and make you smile all at the same time? It’s confusing. Either way, I love those teeth!

Completely unrequested hugs. Too much cute.

These last few images just totally say “boy” to me with all of the playing in the hay and horsing around with Dad and not caring at all about the white t-shirts they’re wearing. I love everything about it.

Aubri, Mike, Braden, and Brody: I’m SO happy we did this. I had such a good time with all of you and it was such a treat to spend the evening with these little guys just taking in their personalities and watching you all interact. Braden and Brody are total sweethearts and so full of life. I don’t know where you guys find your energy! Thank you for letting me capture a snapshot of this moment in your lives.

Chelsey & Brent – Engagement

“Without the Capitol, we never would have met,” Chelsey told me. Brent was a page for the Michigan legislature at the same time as his good friend, Alan. Alan and Mariam introduced Brent to Mariam’s good friend, Chelsey, and they’ve been dating ever since. Don’t you love it when life works out that way? I do. I also love when couples have totally perfect reasons like that for the places they choose to have their engagement session. And the Michigan State Capitol Building is a gorgeous backdrop nonetheless!

Chelsey and Brent: I had such a great time with you guys! Thank you so much for being so open to ideas and, Brent, for facing your fear of heights along the way. I hope you love some of the images we captured. Thanks for letting me be a small part of this happy time in your lives!

Mariam & Alan – Engagement

Mariam and I had been talking about this session for quite a while. We had a strategy for strolling around the MSU gardens and visiting the Sparty statue. We had a plan. See, we’re both technically planners at our day jobs, which is how I know Mariam. Well, then the torrential downpours came and we had to reschedule the session. No problem though, I’m pretty sure that all happened so we could have the gorgeous weather and dreamy sunlight we did have that evening. Alan, Mariam, and I wandered around the various gardens and they even took me to two gardens I had never seen before – and that I immediately loved – the English garden and the Japanese garden. It was a great photo-filled time and their pup, Zoe, even joined us for a bit!

Could Zoe BE any cuter?

Alan and Mariam: I had such a great time with you guys and, Alan, it was so fun to meet you finally! Thanks for being so open to my ideas and being so dedicated to having great photographs, you guys are a dream and it was definitely an honor for me! Colin – Portraits

So before I started typing this post, I had to go back and see what Colin looked like last time I photographed him. Well, now he’s over 9-months-old and he looks totally the same except so much more like a little man now in his little yellow collared shirt! It’s amazing how that happens in just a few short months. Colin was just as calm as he was at our last session and even made a couple of goofy faces to make us all smile. He’s a real charmer, that one.

Eric came with me to this session and we had a relaxed afternoon of photographs and barbeque with Colin and his parents, J.Mike and Anna. I’m now thinking every session in the summer should be just like that!

I would love to take this same photo every day and watch how his little face changes:

This is definitely one of my favorites. Love those lashes!

Owen – Portraits

Meet Owen! Today is Owen’s second birthday so I’m sure he’s somewhere celebrating right now…maybe even with a superhero cape and some frosting on his face. Live it up, Owen!

Before Owen could turn two, however, we had to meet to ring his birthday in with style and photos. So, late last week, I met up with him and his parents, Kim and Ed, at Kensington Metropark and we had a great time visiting the farm animals, playing on the jungle gym, running in the grass, and just being goofy. It was a beautiful evening and this was definitely a great way to spend it! Happy birthday, Owen!

In that last photo, Owen is showing his mom how old he’s going to be. So sweet.

Kim, Ed, and Owen: Thank you so much for the honor of photographing Owen together with you both, I had a great time and it was so nice to meet him in person! Thank you for braving the closed highways and rush hour; I think it was all worth it. Give Owen a happy birthday high-five for me!

Preston – Portraits

We played in the sandbox, raced a car up and down the driveway, walked through the grass and down the sidewalk, and even read some books. Sounds like a pretty great evening, doesn’t it? Nice and well rounded. And, after I left that night, I thought about how lucky I was to be doing all of those things – a bunch of little things – that added up to a fun evening of capturing Preston at that specific moment in time. Last time I saw Preston, he was only three months old and was just sort of wiggling around a bit. Now, he’s one year old and he can walk, make lots of sounds and faces, and his little personality is really coming out. It was a such a treat to see him again and document his progress, his laughter, and even some of the little faces he made as his parents, Amanda and Nate, put him in the grass – something he’s not too fond of just yet.

Preston and Moose seem to play together like old friends…adorable!

I could not resist this face! He was having the time of his life in that car as Nate pushed him around.

Christine & Tracey – Impromptu Newlywed Session

I’m not gonna lie. With every step I took, I thought about the heavy camera and couple of lenses sitting in the depths of my backpack. There were moments when I questioned my sanity. Everything I’d ever learned about backpacking told me to shed all superfluous weight possible. In my mind, the extra weight was making the uphills a little slower and the downhills a little more painful. Even if it really was just all in my mind. But, my 2007 backpacking trek was also what prompted me to follow my dream of photography and, by golly, I was going to carry that darn camera over those mountains and take some photographs!

Well, in an amazing turn of events, as Eric and I relaxed on Max Patch, up walked Christine and Tracey. In their wedding attire. On the Appalachian Trail. With a camera. They hiked up that mountain together just a few days after their official wedding ceremony to soak in the mountains – which they told me they loved – and get some amazing photos. Seeing this, I couldn’t just sit there as they took pictures of each other and worked so hard to get some with both of them in the frame. After all, I carried superfluous gear up and down those hills for a reason!

So, I crossed the top of the bald mountain, congratulated them, and asked Christine and Tracey if I could take a few photographs to send to them later. They happily obliged and I spent the next handful of minutes photographing a bride and groom. In their wedding attire. On the Appalachian Trail. With my camera. It had all come full circle for me. I felt like the world was shining down on me and saying I was in the exact place I needed to be at that moment. Thanks, world.

Tracey and Christine, it was SUCH a pleasure to meet you both – and in such an amazing place! Thank you for allowing this total stranger to spend a few moments of precious time with you and chat about the mountains and your wedding. I can tell you are an amazing couple and I wish you a lifetime of happiness. I hope you will hike the trail one day and let me know about it so I can send a little trail magic along the way! Carter – Portraits

I had never seen a baby so in tune with what the the adults around him were up to until I met Carter. He seemed to know just why I was at his house one fine Saturday morning and he had the nerves to prove it. His mom, Laurie, kept joking that he was nervous for his big photo shoot because he looked at my big old camera like it was coming to eat him. But then we had some fun and Carter got some tickles and all was well in the world. At the end of our session, he knew. I put away my big old camera and Carter let out of sigh of relief.

But this is what happened in the interim…the little jokester was all about his photo shoot!

And Laurie knew just how to make him smile:

One day Carter will say he’s too cool to wear a puppy towel on his head but for now it might be the cutest thing ever…

Bob and Laurie and Carter, thank you so much for having me in your home to photograph Carter, it was a huge honor and it was so good to finally lay eyes on him in person! He is a total doll and I can only imagine the little personality he’s going to have as he gets older! Hope you enjoy the photos!
