Happy Friday to all and to all a good weekend!

Just wanted to share this bit of good news that Jillian and Mike’s 2011 wedding at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor is being featured in The Knot Michigan’s 2012 Fall/Winter issue which will be on stands very soon. It’s a huge honor to be part of this publication alongside so many other talented photographers and vendors. Without the awesome talent of Bill Hamilton Designs, TwoFoot Creative, Decadent Delight and, of course, the folks at UMMA, the day may not have been as wonderfully photogenic. Most of all, I’m happy that we’re still celebrating Jillian and Mike almost a year later – they deserve it! You can see more from their Ann Arbor wedding here.

Jennifer & Kevin | Engagement: Birmingham

Engagement sessions are one of my very favorite parts of working with a couple. While I often get a good sense of a couple’s personality at our initial meeting, it’s usually not until the engagement session that we can really talk more about their interests and who they are as people. I love taking that time to uncover interesting things and develop a perspective that will lead me into the wedding day.

So, meet Jennifer and Kevin! We met one evening last week at Quarton Lake in Birmingham - where they love to walk their two energetic pups you’ll meet in a minute – and had the opportunity to talk about their wedding, some travel plans and even a little about gardening. These two love to garden. In fact, Kevin proposed to Jennifer in a vegetable garden! So, I took the opportunity to pick their brains for advice about my new container garden…

I just wanted to share a few photos of a beautiful coffee table book that just came in. This is the 8×8″ book I designed as a studio sample for portrait sessions but I’m happy to say these are available both for portraits – children and engagements – and for weddings. They have thin pages and are ideal for keeping out in a prominent place to share with family and friends. The Little Things – Cozy Cabins

I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to add a cozy cabin here to illustrate how much they make me smile. I’m not sure if a cabin can qualify as a “little” thing but I guess it depends how you look at it. If given the choice for probably about 95% of the year, I would choose to travel to a cabin in the woods over loafing on a beach in the sun for a week. Because, at a cabin in the woods, you can do things like read a book for hours, have a campfire, cook a simple meal, or just sit and smell pine needles.

Here are some photographs from last weekend’s visit with friends at a cabin in Pennsylvania. Along with a few from a local herb farm – Quiet Creek Herb Farm – where I finally had a chance to stop along my way.

Little Meals : Rainbow Trout with Roasted Confetti Potatoes & Asparagus

So, I’m not going to lie. This weekend is going to be spent with great friends in a tiny cabin eating a lot of food. I’ll be spending the next two days with hiker friends and when we get together, it seems we like to eat like we’re still hiking across the country. So, I’m getting myself in the proper spirit this morning with photographs of food.

Maya & Manoj | Wedding

Spring is such a pretty time for photographs and beautiful colors. It was an honor for me to shoot with Alli McWhinney at Maya and Manoj’s spring wedding earlier this month where I had the pleasure of capturing not only the beautiful pastels on the trees but also the vivid colors of the women’s saris. Little Meals: Eggplant Parmesan

I love eggplant. But I almost never eat eggplant parmesan at a restaurant …. because I love eggplant.

I had never made eggplant parmesan at home either because I’d started to believe I didn’t like the dish even though it contains so many things I love. Fresh parmesan. Eggplant. Tomatoes. Mmm.

But the other day I found a recipe that seemed deliciously simple so I went for it and, to my excitement, it yielded a delicious dinner. And I only realized when I was preparing the eggplant to bake that the reason I haven’t loved eggplant parmesan in the past is because of the heavy breading most restaurants use. To me, it overpowers the flavor of the eggplant itself. So, if you actually like eggplant…check out this recipe from Stone Soup. It’s delicious. And is not breaded. Mmm.

A little meal that made me very happy and turned me into a believer of eggplant parmesan.

The Little Things: Light Pouring Through Windows & Birds in Flight

Last weekend, Eric and I took a little spur of the moment trip to Saugatuck to enjoy the last few days of his spring break. We had never been to Saugatuck but thanks to my friend, Aruna, I knew we should stay at Timber Bluff. And so we did. The weekend was full of us staring out the cottage’s windows onto Lake Michigan and light pouring in the windows and onto us. It was a beautiful mix. Natural light is such a beautiful thing and even though you can only photograph its reflections, I think photographs go a long way in capturing its beauty.

At home, I follow Eric turning off ugly ceiling lights and open blinds instead. I love the feel of natural daylight filling up a room. It feels clean and cozy. Warm and fuzzy. It’s a small thing, yes, but it makes me a little happy inside.

Oh…and the lucky sight of birds in flight over the lake made me happy too.

Isabella Valentine | Newborn Portraits

I have always known my dear friend, Tiffany, was beautiful. She was beautiful when we learned how to canoe together at sixth grade science camp despite our flannel plaid shirts and pegged jeans. She was stunning when we rocked out to Billy Blanks’ Tae Bo together in her parents’ basement. She was even beautiful when a bird used her head as a target as we walked to school together in seventh grade. But I have never seen Tiffany more beautiful than in the moments I first saw her hold her new baby girl…

Welcome to the world, Isabella Valentine…you are beautiful just like your mother.

Oh, yes. Tiffany and I, circa seventh grade. This blog post is way overdue as little Bella was born on Valentine’s Day but I just couldn’t post without an old school photo of the two of us which I first had to dig out of my parents’ house. Love you, Tiff! And my biggest congratulations (again) to you and Joe. She is perfect. :)
