The Little Things – A Perfect Snowstorm

As Eric and I drove away from northern Michigan, we talked about how you just never know if you will get to see something like it again. See, on Friday evening as we settled in with a couple of friends at a little home we rented in Leelanau, I warmed a bit of (delicious) hot chocolate from Grocer’s Daughter Chocolate on the stove. In my final stirs of the pot, the lights flickered and a few minutes later we were sitting in front of the fireplace without electricity to rely on. We watched the snow come down steadily that night and the next morning, we woke up to over a foot of snow on the ground and in the trees. It’s only in a snowstorm so intense that the branches of each tree are individually coated with their own blankets of snow.

We’ve been waiting all winter long for something like this and we were in the perfect place for this perfect snowstorm. I love how a good snowstorm forces everything to stop, forces the bustle to end. In this case, I loved how it brought strangers together to share a meal at the only place in town that had power. I love how the pure white snow makes everything look serene – if only for a few days. And I love how, in a perfect snowstorm when you have nowhere else to be, the only thing left to do is admire it all…and hope you’ll see something like it again in your lifetime.

I feel lucky to have seen this perfect snowstorm. It’s another little thing in life that makes me disproportionately happy.
